Mercadona has launched a new mobile and web interface for customers in Barcelona after opening a new distribution centre in the city.
The new online shopping service, which is designed to be more user-friendly and offer more product information, will be available across four postal codes in Barcelona and is set to expand to the rest of the city over the next few months.
The service is built around a new €7 million logistics centre in the Zona Franca industrial estate called Colmena, which will allow an eightfold increase in productivity and efficiency by centralising the preparation and delivery of orders. The centre will receive orders on the same day they are dispatched to guarantee freshness and use a fleet of 50 vehicles with three different models able to transport up to 15 orders and feature three differentiated temperature zones for different products.
Sized at 10,500 square metres, it will initially have a staff of 92 workers from stores in Barcelona, set to expand to 350. It has additional features such as soar panels and special insulation for the cold storage area.
Customers can choose from a simiilar €7.21 per order and offers one-hour delivery slots between 7AM and 10PM.
The upgraded service was premiered in Valencia in March 2018.
Juana Roig, general director of Mercadona’s online shopping project, pointed out that : “After the success in València of the online purchase of Mercadona during its first year of life, today we arrive in Barcelona with the assurance that this service has enormous potential, we anticipate that the launch in this great city will be a significant milestone in the firm commitment of the company to address the challenge of online sales in food. “
Mercadona hopes to expand the service to Madrid at the beginning of next year.
