Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona is building a warehouse near the centre of Seville to support online shopping.
Known internally as a ‘Hive’, the new 30,220 square metre site in the Higuerón Sur area will allow the retailer to launch online shopping for customers in the city and its surrounding areas.
Mercadona paid €10.8 million for the site in a public tender. City authorities are hoping to attract other businesses to the area.
Work on the site will begin in 2020, allowing the company to centralise the preparation and distribution of online orders in the area.
Mercadona also hopes to build Hives in Barcelona and Madrid this year.
The new building follows the establishment of a similar location in the centre of Valencia in May 2018, which allows it to serve 97 towns. Mercadona says the site has allowed it to double the number of customers and achieve a monthly online turnover of €2.2 million.
The company increased its investment in 2018 by 50% to €1.5 billion.
