Lidl has launched its first loyalty card in Belgium in the form of a smartphone app.

Available for free on iOS or Android, the app allows customers to receive digital receipts and discounts, as well as access a store locator.

Customers enter their details to register and then are provided with a customer number and a QR code that they can scan at the cash register.

The discount retailer has also introduced wi-fi in its 305 stores across the country to allow customers to make use of the app.

Lidl tested the app for five months with employees before going live with a minimum viable product.

In the future Lidl will add the ability to create shopping lists and receive targeted coupons based on their buying behaviour.

Thomas De Ganck, head of digital and innovation at Lidl: “We want to offer our customers the best possible shopping experience at all times, and Belgians are known to love discount coupons.

“Thanks to Lidl Plus, customers will now be able to take advantage of additional promotions via digital coupons, and the application also includes other services such as the digital receipt of checkout tickets, access to promotional brochures and a “store locator.”
