Wayfair has upgraded its mobile app with new augmented reality features, aimed at making it easier for customers to shop for furniture while on the go.

The furniture retailer has upgraded the “View in Room 3D” augmented reality feature, which allows customers to visualise how products will look and fit in their space. The “Interactive Photo” now allows shoppers to take a photo of the space and visualise products there

Wayfair has also introduced its advanced room design tool, Room Planner 3D, to the app, allowing customers to create an interactive 3D room, view it from different angles and experiment with styles and layouts.

In addition, it has made its camera features, including View in Room 3D and the visual search tool Search with Photo more accessible, allowing customers to access them with one click.

The new features are available on the iOS version of the application.

Matt Zisow, vice president of product management, experience design and analytics at Wayfair: “With more than half of our customers placing orders on a mobile device, we’re thrilled to deliver powerful new tools that make shopping for home even easier, and reflect the evolution of how consumers are shopping for their homes.

“With the Wayfair mobile shopping app, consumers have the flexibility to discover and visualise their favourite products among millions of options, then design their rooms from start to finish, no matter where they are.”

Zisow added: “At Wayfair, we have always been focused on helping our customers shop for their homes with ease and confidence; technologies like AR and machine learning allow us to do this in elegant and scalable ways.

“With the latest updates to the Wayfair app, we continue to push the limits of what’s possible by iterating on advanced AR and machine learning capabilities and introducing new and innovative spatial awareness techniques to an ecommerce experience, bridging the gap between imagination and reality. With the Wayfair app, shoppers can quickly and easily transform any room in their home from anywhere.”

IKEA also recently upgraded its app, including allowing customers to point their smartphone camera at furniture and automatically find the most similar IKEA product. IKEA’s app also allows customers to receive home furnishing tips and recommendations, which will be curated based on the customer’s behaviour and context. Customers can define areas they want to furnish, with the app automatically suggesting possibilities.
