Whilst rumours about the release date of the iPhone 5 are still to be confirmed – 5 September if my sources are correct, at least in the US and Canada – a mobile phone comparison website has polled people around the UK to see what they expect from the new iPhone model.

And they have found that people want it to be thinner, have a longer battery life, bigger memory, be lighter, faster and better at holding a signal. Some even want it to be waterproof. Kinky.

www.GoodMobilePhones.co.uk polled 1,786 men and women aged 18 over, asking them to specify what they expect from the new iPhone 5 model. Respondents were able to select multiple answers from a list of possible phone features.

According to the results, the top 10 features that Brits would most like to see on the iPhone 5, were:

1) Thinner handset 48%

2) Longer battery life 45%

3) Larger memory 39%

4) Lighter handset 32%

5) Faster internet 31%

6) Better signal capabilities 25%

7) Higher camera resolution 24%

8) Better email facilities 18%

9) Waterproof handset 14%

10) Compatibility with HD movie 9%

When asked, “Do you plan on swapping your current handset for the new iPhone 5 model after it is released?” just under half, 45%, answered “yes.” Furthermore, just over a third of these respondents, 38% said that they will get the new iPhone 5 ‘as soon as it is released;’ whilst the majority, 62%, claimed that they will ‘wait a few months’ before purchasing the new handset.

Mark Owen, Managing Director of GoodMobilePhones.co.uk, had the following to say about the study: “With the new iPhone 5 expected for release, we thought it would be interesting to see what people expect from the new version. With fast-moving technology constantly updating what we expect from a handset, people’s expectations get higher and higher; and it can be difficult to pinpoint what exactly will be featured in new models.”

He continued: “It was interesting to see ‘lighter handset’ top the charts as the thing people most want from the new iPhone 5, and clearly lighter, slimmer technology is important to mobile phone users. I guess we’ll all just have to wait and see what we can expect when the phone is released!”
