Sainsbury’s is trialling a 100% electric van in areas of London ahead of a potential wider roll-out.
The zero emissions van, named Evie, will deliver up to 30 orders per day to Sainsbury’s customers across central and east London.

With an expected range of around 80 miles on a single charge and the capacity to carry the same weight as a diesel vehicle, the vans will recharge overnight at the Sainsbury’s distribution centre in Bromley-by-Bow.

The supermarket will introduce a second electric van called Stevie in May which will serve the same area.

Sainsbury’s says that it could introduce more electric vans if the trial is successful.

Clodagh Moriarty, Sainsbury’s Group chief digital officer, said the company was “lead[ing] the charge in putting the latest electric van technology to the test for grocery deliveries.

“We’re always looking at how we can use the latest innovations to best serve our customers and this trial will help us explore how we can deliver Sainsbury’s groceries in a more environmentally-friendly way.”

The company has explored other zero emissions delivery options, including introducing a fleet of five electric cargo bikes in April 2018 which deliver up to 100 online orders a day.

A Sainsbury’s executive said earlier this month that supermarkets are going to be forced to adapt to using a range of delivery methods to meet sustainability goals.

Speaking at the eDelivery stage at InternetRetailing Expo, online operations development manager Max Conrad said the time when one solution would fit all delivery situations had passed due to a combination of legislation and customer pressure.
