Security matters: why attention to detail is so important in storing customer data

In today’s InternetRetailing newsletter, we report on studies that reveal both that consumers are having doubts about the way they share their personal information with online retailers and brands, and that IT security professionals don’t, as a group, seem too sure about how the data their organisations collect is stored. Taken together, these results suggest a lack of attention to detail, and that shoppers are right to be concerned. Trust between shopper and retailer is vital for online retailing to prosper in the long-term and how payment data is stored should be pretty high up the priority list for retailers and their IT security staff, along with the detail of compliance to PCI DSS regulations.

Today we also report on Christmas trading figures from Top500 retailers including Dixons Carphone, Carpetright and Pretty Green. We have a preview of the exhibitors and technology at IRX 2016, while today’s guest comment comes from Paul Brown of The Grass Roots Group, who considers how beacons can be used to reward customers.
