Zalando has reported its second-quarter gross merchandise volume increased 2.8% to €3.8bn, with revenue hitting €2.6bn, thanks to strong growth in its sports, designer and beauty offering.

As the European fashion marketplace works to become a “lifestyle ecosystem”, it has grown the number of active customers by 300,000 to 49.8 million.

“Our ecosystem strategy empowers us to cover a larger share of the fashion and lifestyle ecommerce market, and the positive response from customers and partners in the second quarter validates our vision,” said Robert Gentz, Zalando co-CEO.

“Our B2C customers are excited by the quality brands we are adding, spending time with our new digital tools and content, and embracing our expanding lifestyle offerings in areas such as Sports, Designer and Beauty. We also recorded double-digit growth in B2B, demonstrating that both our growth vectors are delivering.”

Zalando has credited its investment in technology, including generative AI, for its B2C growth. It plans to strengthen existing sites, continue its collaboration with OpenAI and build even more AI solutions for the fashion industry.

A company profile in the first RetailX Europe Top1000 360° highlights how Zalando uses digital channels to serve customers across Europe, using technology to help shoppers find the products that are right for them from a large range.

David Schneider, co-CEO of Zalando, noted: “Our B2C strategy around quality, lifestyle and inspiration clearly sets us apart from the competition and will continue to win us market share. Our customers want even better usability, convenience and digital experience.

“But beyond that, new digital-first generations of customers want inspiration and entertainment while shopping online. Using our data and technology, we can integrate engaging content into ecommerce and enable personalised conversations with our customers. There is a massive opportunity to engage with customers on a whole new level.”
