Since September, Poundland has recruited 962 former Wilko colleagues to join its team following its take over of some of the essentials retailer’s store leases.

When Wilko fell into administration, Poundland agreed to take over 71 Wilko store leases, it has since worked to reopen of 64 of those locations. Some 826 former Wilko colleagues have now joined Poundland on hourly paid contracts, and a further 122 have been appointed as store managers or assistant store managers.

While in Poundland’s main customer support centre in Walsall, 14 former Wilko team members have joined the team.

“I really want to thank the Poundland team for their extraordinary efforts in making so many roles available, so quickly, to those affected by the administration of Wilko,” said Simon Wells, people director at Poundland

“We know by keeping our promise to re-open former Wilko stores in such numbers, and at such pace, we’ve made a big difference to hundreds of people.

“We’re incredibly proud that so many former Wilko team members have now chosen to continue their careers here at Poundland.”

Earlier this year, the discount retailer begun a recruitment drive as it transformed one of its warehouses into a digital distribution centre. Poundland aimed to hire almost 200 people by December as the centre becomes a hub for its growing digital business.

And in October, Poundland’s owner Pepco announced plans to invest in its store network. It plans to open 400 new stores across key markets, including in Italy and Spain.
