Tesco Direct notched up impressive sales growth of almost a third this autumn.

Tesco today said sales through its Direct channel grew by 30% in the 13 weeks to November 27. Through Tesco Direct, customers can order from an extended range of non-food goods, either online or by phone, with a choice of delivery to home or to a local store through the Click and Collect service.

The update came as Tesco unveiled an 8.8% rise in group-wide sales, including VAT but excluding petrol. International sales were strong, at 15.7%, led by growing investment in new store openings in Asia – where growth was up by 23.4%.

In the UK, sales including VAT but excluding petrol rose by 5%, while like-for-like sales improved to 1.5%.

Chief executive Terry Leahy said: “As the global economic recovery gathers pace, our broad-based strategy, combined with our ongoing focus on productivity savings, is enabling us to maintain growth in a sustainable, profitable way, delivering value for customers and for shareholders.”
