Supermarket Tesco is set to open a new ecommerce distribution centre in North London later this year.

Developer Gazeley, a logistics specialist, announced today that it had signed a £20m deal to build the 152,000sq ft warehouse, which will handle home deliveries as well as supplying Tesco Express stores.

About 550 jobs are expected to be created as a result of the investment, and the centre will serve Tesco customers in north London and the home counties.

Planning permission has already been won and practical completion of the centre is expected to be reached in 20 weeks.

Nigel Godfrey, senior vice president of UK operations at Gazeley, said: “Ecommerce developments are an increasing requirement for retailers and being able to deliver efficiently and effectively is vital.”
