The opportunities – and challenges – of crosschannel Christmas trading

This is an archived article - we have removed images and other assets but have left the text unchanged for your reference

In today’s InternetRetailing newsletter, we’re thinking about the opportunities and the challenges of online trading, especially in the run up to the peak Christmas shopping season.

With £1bn in sales predicted for Black Friday alone by IMRG and Experian, this Christmas offers opportunities to retailers. But, they warn, it’s important that retailers prepare well for the date. Argos owner the Home Retail Group also had a warning around Black Friday this week: its unpredictability meant it could not accurately estimate its likely profits for the year. The news overnight of internet service provider Talk Talk’s cyber hack also reminds us of the importance for retailers too of ensuring their security is as tight as can be ahead of this key shopping period.

Today we report on IRUK500 retailers from Debenhams to Mothercare as they bring us up to date with their multichannel strategies, and we have the latest retail sales figures from the ONS.

Today’s guest comment comes from Paul Haywood of Dyn, who considers how retailers can most effectively use the internet to gain a share of the cross-border ecommerce opportunity.
