In today’s InternetRetailing newslettter, we’re exploring the pressure to get up to date with digital commerce. Customers’ expectations are changing quickly, but many retailers still lag behind, conscious, according to a new report from Fujitsu, that their IT needs to be updated, but at the same time worried that they are investing in the wrong things.
No wonder retailers who have that cracked – or more cracked than others – are becoming a sought-after commodity in their own right. So much so that not just one retail group but two are willing to pay upwards of a billion pounds for multichannel innovator Argos. Unlike other dotcom hot properties of years gone by, Argos is profitable, with a benchmark pre-tax profit of £129m in the year to February 28 2015, on sales of £4.1bn. Today we consider how the rival offers from Sainsbury’s and Steinhoff measure up against each other.
Today we also report on Rakuten as it adopts Fits.me technology across its ecommerce marketplace, and Joules as it moves last order times to 8pm, following a new delivery contract. Today’s IRX 2016 preview looks at the digital sales and marketing conference at the event, while the guest comment is from Paul Rouke of PRWD, considering the role of conversion rate optimisation.
