An online service that delivers refillable versions of big-name brands to the door is set to launch in the UK next month.

Loop is already running in France, in partnership with Carrefour, and the US, in partnership with Kroger and Walgreens. In the UK, Terracycle-owned Loop is set to work with Tesco when it launches in March.

Loop says that its service reimagines the traditional milk delivery service with a modern perspective. It promises: “A revolution in design from your favourite brands” with everyday essentials now “available in durable, functional packaging that’s beautiful enough to display”.

Customers using the Loop service order online branded goods, from groceries to personal care and household cleaning proudcts. They are delivered to the door in a zero waste Loop tote bag in  packaging that has been designed for reuse of each particular product. Once products are finished, customers put them back into the Loop tote and schedule a pick-up from their home. Loop cleans the empty packages and refills them for future purchases. Customers can set their favourite products to auto-refill once they are returned. The company says that its packaging is 35% more sustainable than traditional ecommerce. Containers are made of materials including stainless steel, aluminium, glass and BPA-free plastics.

On the US website, shoppers can stock up on products from Reinburger nut butter and Puretto coffee, to Haagen-Dazs ice cream and Pantene shampoo. Shipping costs a flat rate of $15, with orders of $100 or more sent for free. A deposit is paid on containers that is refunded once they are returned.

Brands including Unilever and PepsiCo are reported to be backing the UK version of the website, where sustainable versions of brands including Tropicana, Persil, Hellmann’s, Sure, Dove and Signal are set to be sold in refillable packaging.
