UK consumers are set to spend a record £22bn shopping from their smartphones and tablets this Christmas, eclipsing sales on PC for the first time, according to a new report.

The VoucherCodes.co.uk Shopping for Christmas 2020 report, carried out by the Centre for Retail Research (CRR), predicts a record year for mcommerce – which it defines as purchases made via mobile devices – with these transactions set to account for 62.6% of all UK online sales this Christmas.

This gives a figure of £22bn, well up on 2019’s figures, in which mcommerce formed a 60.6% share and £13.5bn’s worth of sales. mcommerce transactions are on-track to move ahead of those made on PCs, which the report predicts will make up 37.4% of total online sales, or £13.19bn.

Smartphone transactions are forecast to be responsible for the highest share of mcommerce transaction this Christmas, with 36.8% of online purchases set to be made from phones, totalling £12.97bn in value.

Despite slowing in popularity in the last four years, tablets will still account for 25.8% of online sales, amounting to £9.10bn.

Angus Drummond, Commercial Director at VoucherCodes.co.uk, comments: “Given that the Covid-19 pandemic has shifted the vast majority of shopping online this year, it comes as no surprise that more people than ever are going to be doing their Christmas shopping on their mobile devices this year.”

He continues: “During 2020, we’ve seen the impressive ways in which brands have developed their mobile user experience to adapt to this sudden shift, focusing on enabling customers to more easily browse, purchase and return safely from the comfort of their sofa. As a result, brands that have made mobile and tablet a priority are most poised to capitalise on the increased number of customers transacting on mobile devices this Christmas.”

Drummond concludes: “Likewise, at VoucherCodes, we’re equipped to assist our brand partners in driving sales and AOV this Christmas thanks to innovations to our own mobile user experience. We’ve allowed customers to more easily find the discount codes they want to use as they shop at the brands they love, as well as connecting them to a host of new brands thanks to our unbeatable offers.”
