Among the hundreds of news articles we’ve published on InternetRetailing.net over the last year, some stories ‘broke out’ and were hugely popular when compared to the rest.

The 2009 top ten is headed by Debenhams’ launch of an online customer research community, followed by Google’s prediction in September that consumers would start their Christmas shopping earlier than usual.

Tesco opening the doors on its online clothing venture came third, followed by research by Shoppercentric in March which revealed that the recession had led to 40% of consumers changing the shops they use.

News early in the year that more than 90% of online merchants planned to add rich media and social networking in 2009 was the fifth most popular article of 2009, followed by Verdict’s predictions for 2010 and beyond, ShopDirect’s launch of Very.co.uk and Argos enabling shoppers to search for clearance bargains by postcode.

Tesco’s plan to use Clubcard data to target third-party advertising on its website came ninth and the top ten is rounded off by the recent news that Apple, John Lewis and Tesco Direct are now top ten online retailers in the UK.
