Vodafone has unveiled its first Internet of Things (IoT) wearable products.

Parents can now buy a V-Kids smartwatch for their children and connect it to the IoT, monitoring their whereabouts via a smartphone app, and receiving alerts if they move out of a designated area. A V-SOS band by Vodafone enables people with mobility issues to call for help in an emergency by sending a message to pre-set contacts.

The launch is part of Vodafone’s strategy to enable people to connect their smart devices to its Internet of Things network easily – logging into the V by Vodafone app and scanning a QR code on the product packaging. Connected devices are then automatically detected and added to the network, with monthly subscriptions for its use that can be added to a Vodafone mobile bill.

Serpil Timuray, Vodafone Group chief commercial and strategy officer, said: “Our growing range of V by Vodafone products and services are enabling our customers to stay connected to everyone and everything that matters to them anytime and anywhere. The V-SOS Band by Vodafone and V-Kids Watch by Vodafone will enable consumers to enjoy greater independence while keeping them safe and secure by being in contact with their families when needed.”

Vodafone has said its V by Vodafone network is the largest of its kind in the world. It provides a way for consumers to manage both Internet of Things-capable devices and to connect non-Internet of Things devices through products including a connected car dongle, a 4G security camera, a pet location and activity tracker and a bag location tracker. It also offers V-Home by Vodafone, services and products connected in the home by the Samsung SmartThings Wifi hub. These latest wearable products extend that range still further.

This year, Vodafone is expected to launch an online product marketplace open to IoT developers that it says will “greatly extend the product choice for customers.”
