There’ll be something of a milestone this year, predicts Mintel, as pureplays overtake multichannel retailers in terms of sheer cash spent online. Clearly, multichannel retailers will still continue to sell more across all their channels, since most sales are made through stores but here at Internet Retailing we think this news is significant because of what it says about brands. Retailers that only trade online are now as much household names as those that are visible on our high streets. That’s only likely to continue, as illustrated aptly by Amazon’s recent move to show Jeremy Clarkson’s new motoring show on Amazon Prime. The show will entice fans to sign up with the subscription service, making it more likely that they’ll then do their shopping with the site. It’s a long way from the BBC, and yet it highlights the continuous change in the way we shop.
In today’s Internet Retailing newsletter we also cover Dixons Carphone and how it’s using mobile devices to ‘staggeringly’ shorten the sales process, and we also show how shopping centre operator Intu is using digital to bring more shoppers to its centre.
We report the latest figures from Pets at Home and Bonmarché, and the latest news on the Internet Retailing Awards 2015.
Today’s guest comment comes from Craig Sears-Black of Manhattan Associates, who considers how retailers can best extend their supply chain to the store.
