What does Christmas shopping tell us about the way the industry is changing?

This is an archived article - we have removed images and other assets but have left the text unchanged for your reference

In today’s Internet Retailing newsletter, our focus is on what retailers and industry studies tell us about the way shopping is changing this Christmas. Evidence from the British Retail Consortium is of a significant move away from visiting the shops and towards buying online this Christmas.

Maybe this is partly evidence of what happens when rain keeps shoppers at home, but we think Christmas trading is of interest not just because it’s the busiest period in the shopping year, but also because long-term shifts in the way we buy can be magnified by the volume of purchases that take place over a concentrated period of time. Indeed, it’s a shift that Asda is taking very seriously: it says the shift in buying habits has now speeded up so much that it is consulting on jobs in its head office. We also look at the effect this has had on delivery and collection over Christmas.

Elsewhere today we carry an interview with Jon Wragg of Supergroup who reflects on 2015 and prospects for 2016 in conversation with Internet Retailing magazine editor Emma Herrod, and we cover the news that Home Retail Group has confirmed its planned sale of Homebase.

Today’s guest comment comes from Marc Pearce of Optilead, who has suggestions on what retailers should be looking for in a cart recovery provider.

Our webinars

Our next webinar is this afternoon, when Grant Coleman of Zmags and Ketan Shah of Lyons Consulting Group will join us for a session on creating shoppable content. The two will discuss how retailers can best approach creating an immersive and personalised customer experience that keeps shoppers’ attention. How to create the shoppable experience that customers crave is at 3pm on January 19. Find out more and register for the free event here.
