XPO Logistics deploys sustainable LEDs, warehouse robots

XPO Logistics is rolling out a new intelligent lighting system and deploying robots to help employees during peak season.
The logistics provider will deploy the solution across 5 million square metres of site surface space in total. The company currently has around 2 million square metres of LEDs.

The system uses sensors to monitor natural light and activity levels, automatically adjusting to provide the optimal level of lighting.

The company says its initiative could save 2200 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Malcolm Wilson, CEO of XPO Logistics Europe, said: “By investing in eco-friendly solutions, we support greener supply chains for our customers and safe, comfortable workspaces for our employees.

“We’re pleased to contribute to the health of our planet with the rapid adoption of intelligent LED technology across our European sites.”

XPO also announced this week that it had increased its use of warehouse robots at its UK sites as it prepares for this year’s peak season.

The robots guide employees to the correct inventory area, validate the items they pick and transport them to packing stations. They use machine learning to improve their performance.

XPO says the robots double productivity rates on average and improve accuracy by up to 40%.
