Zalando is recruiting members of the Danish public to manage a new network of click and collect points as it announces plans for a new distribution centre in the Netherlands.

The fashion giant is seeking local residents who already spend most of the day at home such as stay-at-home parents and the self-employed to manage its new community service points.

Working with PostNord, Zalando plans to introduce 50 of the points in residential areas of the cities of Copenhagen and Aarhus. The option is available at checkout on, with the service points offering opening hours between 4PM and 8PM.

Remko Bakker, lead Zalando Logistics Platform Services, said: “Complementing the existing network with private pick-up and drop-off points could add tremendous value and customer convenience, since they offer a win-win situation for both the private operators and customers.

“People who are at home can help their community by accepting parcels for their neighbours and in return they receive a small compensation.”

The fashion giant also announced this week that it would build a new fulfilment centre in the Netherlands to support ambitious growth targets in Western Europe.

Located next to the A12 highway, the 140,000 square metre site at Bleiswijk near Rotterdam will provide deliveries to customers in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Spain and the UK.

Zalando will invest €200 million in the centre’s intralogistics, introducing high levels of automation and sustainable energy solutions such as solar panels. It will be capable of holding 16 million items.

The site will begin delivering in summer 2021. Zalando currently has nine centres across Europe.

Jan Bartels, SVP customer fulfilment, said: “A strong logistics network is the foundation for realising our growth strategy and the vision of becoming the Starting Point for Fashion.

“By constructing a new state-of-the-art fulfilment centre in Bleiswijk, we are confident that this is an important step forward in building the infrastructure to achieve.”
