Thanks in the main to the pandemic, food and drink app downloads have boomed worldwide, with as many as 1.7 billion being downloaded in 2021 alone – a 10% rise on the previous year.
Data from data.ai (formerly App Annie) in its 2022 State of Food and Drink on Mobile Report, shows that time spent on food and drinks apps has grown 65% YoY in the past year.
It finds that food delivery and carryout apps remain the largest share of total downloads and sessions of any subgenre, representing 57% of total food and drink downloads globally in Q1 2022. Sessions in Food delivery and carryout apps grew 30% YoY to top 47 billion global sessions.
Food delivery and carryout remained the largest sector and saw a positive, yet moderate, +5% growth YoY in downloads with a +28% increase in sessions, indicating high demand from now regular users. Grocery Delivery has become increasingly important as a high-growth sector in both downloads and usage
Grocery delivery apps represented 25% of all downloads in Q1 2022. They experienced phenomenal growth at 40% YoY. Engagement grew even faster, total sessions up 70% YoY to 8.6 billion globally.
Ultrafast delivery saw the strongest growth YoY at 266% globally — driven by fast movers like Zepto, Getir and Flink. Turkey-based Getir was the #1 app globally in the subgenre, surpassing the next 3 apps by more than 2.4x. Zepto and Grofer ranked #2 and #3, respectively, by global downloads in Q1 2022.
