IKEA is launching a second-hand marketplace in the UK for the sale of preloved IKEA goods. The dedicated platform will be accessible to IKEA Family members and will enable them to resell IKEA products they no longer want or use. The platform has been piloted in Spain and Norway, and will come to the UK later this year.

A spokesperson from IKEA said: “With the launch of IKEA second-hand marketplace in the UK, we’re taking a meaningful step toward creating a destination that simplifies access to pre-owned IKEA furniture.

“A trusted and vibrant space”

“Our goal is to make passing on beloved IKEA pieces as seamless as possible. We’re creating a trusted and vibrant space to make it quick and easy for our IKEA Family members to trade directly with one another. We want the process for buying and selling pre-owned IKEA products to be simple, accessible and rewarding.”

The Nordic furniture giant has experienced softening demand over the last few years, with declining retail sales and rising operational costs. It remains financially robust, however, and has taken steps to address these challenges by cutting corporate jobs, slashing product prices, and opening smaller, local outlets to meet customer demand.

Useful loyalty driver

The peer-to-peer second-hand marketplace will act as a loyalty driver for new and future IKEA Family members, capturing marketshare from competitors such as Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace, which resell a significant number of IKEA goods, while ensuring IKEA customers remain within the organisation’s ecosystem. The launch also supports the company’s goal to become a fully circular business by 2030.

The company says more details about the launch will be announced later this year.
