Fast fashion giant ASOS is adding new DPD electric vehicles to its delivery service as it renews its contract with the parcel giant.
The multi-million pound contract will see the carrier offering services across the UK until September 2024, extending a contract which has been in place for over 10 years.
As well as the continuation of existing services, the contract requires 50% of deliveries within the London Ultra Low Emission Zone to be served by electric delivery vehicles only. DPD installed an all-electric parcel depot in Westminster in October and aims to have nearly 600 electric vehicles on the road by 2021.
ASOS also works with Gnewt Cargo on electric deliveries in London. The retailer picks and packs parcels in Barnsley and moves this to Gnewt facilities in the outskirts of east London, where they are sorted before being loaded onto the electric fleet. One of the key innovations in the partnership is that consumers are notified that the parcel has been delivered through an electric van.
DPD’s CEO Dwain McDonald said that the partnership with ASOS had led to the creation of some of DPD’s most innovative services; this includes in-flight delivery options and the likes of Follow My Parcel and Precise.
He said: “This is a very fast-moving sector and we work with the best in the business, which in turn, helps us improve and innovate to meet their demands.
“The next five years will see the delivery landscape transformed again with greener, more sustainable deliveries, more geo-location innovation and of course Brexit. We’re ahead of the game on all three fronts, but the investment in our all-electric fleet and depot network is key for us. We expect to have the largest EV fleet in the industry and plan to double the number of electric vehicles year on year.
“Being able to provide customers like ASOS with smarter, cleaner and more sustainable parcel deliveries is a top priority for us.”
