Chemist Direct says it has seen a sharp rise in average order values after introducing new search technology.

The online healthcare and pharmacy store said order values from customers who used search rose by 196% after it introduced site search from SLI Systems .

Today search customers on the site generate 43% of turnover, while their conversion rate is 175% higher than those who don’t use search.

Chemist Direct introduced SLI Systems’ search when it relaunched its site at the beginning of 2014. It wanted to make it easier for customers to find the product they were looking for from its 20,000-strong catalogue.

“With an online catalogue of over 20,000 products and processing between 70,000 and 80,000 transactions each month, putting the right products in front of customers as quickly as possible is critical,” said Stephen Lovell of Chemist Direct. “The only way to do it well is using intelligent search.”

Marcus Law, head of marketing EMEA at SLI Systems, said: “Search is undoubtedly a key factor in the success of any ecommerce website. Not only does it enhance the experience for customers, the sales and conversion figures continue to demonstrate the commercial benefits of enhanced search capabilities.”

Chemist Direct was founded in 2008 and ships more than 20m products a year to more than a million customers in the UK and around the world.
