The DeliveryX Top1000 Europe 2023 report, which will be launched during an in-depth discussion as part of Ecommerce World Review, features an exclusive look at how Albert Heijn is cleaning up its urban grocery deliveries.

The Elite retailer has ambitious plans to electrify its city centre delivery fleets entirely. By the end of 2023 Albert Heijn’s deliveries in Amsterdam, the Hague, central Rotterdam and Utrecht will only be made electrically.

Albert Heijn and its transport partners plan to increase the number of e-trucks and e-delivery vans in its fleets. The Dutch supermarket reported that compared to a diesel truck, an electric truck saves 75,000kg CO2 per year per truck, when used in an urban setting. An electric van saves 13,000kg of CO2 per year compared to a diesel variant.

“Making transport more sustainable is an important pillar for us,” said Constantijn Ninck Blok, director of logistics and supply chain at Albert Heijn. “With more electric kilometres in our cities, we can deliver quieter and cleaner.

“With this we improve the impact of transport on noise and local CO2 emissions. The steps we are taking now contribute to the ambition to achieve our mission ‘making better food accessible together, for everyone’ and to contribute to a more sustainable world.”

Furthermore, a large part of the electricity used by these vehicles will be generated by the more than 10,000 solar panels on the roof of a local distribution centre.
