Currys and Superdrug latest to invest in bricks-and-mortar retail

InternetRetailing

Technology retailer Currys and beauty store Superdrug have both announced plans to upgrade their existing network and open new sites, as they see the potential of high streets and retail shopping destinations.

Currys
To better showcase the latest technology, Currys are updating 65 stores. The retailer said these sites will have around 90% of their existing space changed making them more navigable for the customer. The revamp will continue throughout 2025.

“We’re committed to our omnichannel offering, and know our customers love our stores and our tech experts. Investing in our retail fundamentals is critical to delivering value for our customers, and in particular, improving our store layouts and growing in-store ranges really excites me,” said Matthew Speight, Currys director of stores.

“I’m looking forward to seeing this transformation to come to life in Garthdee, Bristol Winterstoke and Grantham, as well as the 62 stores that follow, and would like to thank all the teams for all the work they’ve done so far.”

Superdrug
As it celebrates 60 years on the UK high streets, Superdrug plans to open 25 new stores this year, as well as extending seven existing stores and refitting 60 over the course of 2024.

Nigel Duxbury, Superdrug’s property director, commented: “We’ve changed a lot in the 60 years since the first Superdrug store opened in Putney high-street, but we remain as committed as ever to providing a seamless shopping experience for our customers, offering the very best in accessible health and beauty.

“This investment into bricks-and-mortar means we can grow our footprint in key locations and highlights our ongoing commitment to highstreets and retail shopping destinations, which are an integral part of local communities and economy.

“2024 will see some of the largest ever Superdrug stores open their doors, which is something we are really excited about, as these larger retail units give us the space to be able to offer new and exciting services and even more of the latest health and beauty products.”

Earlier this month, Superdrug announced the expansion of its Lakeside store which sees it include Nurse services and Beauty Studio area.

Jollyes, Mango, Screwfix, Primark and Sephora have all announced plans to expand their UK store networks this year.
