eBay has said that mobile commerce continues to be a key driver of growth in its business. It gained some three million new mobile customers over the second quarter of its financial year, a figure that has grown by more than 90% on the same period last year.
“eBay’s mobile assets and capabilities are delivering innovative seamless commerce experiences for merchants and consumers across multiscreen shopping environments,” said eBay, whose holdings include the eBay.co.uk marketplace and payments company PayPal, in its second quarter financial statement.
At the same time, revenue in the quarter to June 30 grew by 14% to $3.9bn, compared to the same period last year. Company-enabled commerce volume grew by 21% to $51bn, of which 22%, or $11bn, was cross-border trade. Net income rose by 8% to $640m.
Within the eBay group, marketplaces revenue rose by 10% to $2bn. The business gained 3.5m active users in the period to reach 120m, 14% up on the same time last year. Gross merchandise volume (GMV), excluding vehicles, rose by 13% to $18bn. In its international business, which includes the UK, GMV rose by 11% to $11bn, outstripping the $7.3bn in GMV made in the US market.
Payments business PayPal showed revenue up by 20% to $1.6bn, and ended the quarter with 132m active registered accounts, a rise of 17%, or 4.7m, on last time. Its net total payments volume grew by 24% to $43bn.
GSI Commerce, now renamed eBay Enterprise, contributed $246m in revenue, up by 11% on last year, while its enterprise commerce platform generated $815m in ecommerce sales, 21% up on last time.
eBay president and chief executive John Donahoe said the quarter had been a strong one. He added: “Macroeconomic headwinds in Europe and Korea will continue to be a challenge in the second half of the year. But our core businesses are strong and we continue to attract millions of new customers each quarter through mobile innovation. We remain confident in our ability to meet our goals and drive global commerce innovation and leadership.”
