From Ocado to Carpetright: stories of growth, Europe…. and Brexit

This is an archived article - we have removed images and other assets but have left the text unchanged for your reference

Today’s InternetRetailing newsletter comes to you from Berlin, where the IREU Top500 report has this morning been launched to an exclusive audience, and where peer-to-peer discussions are now underway between a host of Top500 senior European retailers at the first InternetRetailing Summit.

Ahead of the summit launch, InternetRetailing editor-in-chief Ian Jindal said that while the UK had last week voted to leave the European Union, InternetRetailing’s focus on the European market would continue. “We’ve always taken a broader view of Europe than simply the EU. We’ve taken a continental approach and we’re going to continue our work in the European market without feeling embarassed or ashamed at all.” He said the launch of the IREU Top500 represented the only research and performance based assessment of the European ecommerce and multichannel market, and that it would be refined and developed over coming years. The IREU Top500 will be published more widely in July. Pre-register here to get a digital copy as soon as it’s released online, and to find out which retail businesses lead Europe in multichannel and internet retailing. For those that couldn’t be with us today, we bring you a pre-Summit interview with Rajesh Kumar of adidas, who is one of the moderators at the event. We’ll be reporting on the Views of the event over the coming weeks.

Today we’re also reporting as the effects of Brexit start to be seen in the UK market.

But we’re also reporting as the growth story that we’ve seen over recent years continues. Ocado today reported growing half-year sales, while Carpetright is reporting a 137% rise in pre-tax profits.

We report as Boots brings digital into the store through its Sales Assist app, while today’s guest comment comes from Guy Chiswick of Webloyalty, who focuses on the need to raise the bar in the customer experience and keep customers from straying.
