FedEx Express is expanding its distribution hub at Paris’ Charles de Galle airport in a move that it claims will make it one of the world’s most advanced express logistics hubs. The development, which comprises an investment of 200 million euros and a commitment to a 30 year lease, will feature new technology that will boost package sorting capacity by more than 40%.
Construction is to begin next summer with completion due by 2019. The hub will include an automated sorting system for large, over-sized packages, a worldwide first for FedEx Express.
“At FedEx we have the ability to pick up, transport and deliver an item from 95% of the people on the planet and most every business in the world, within one to two business days,” said David Bronczek, president and CEO of FedEx Express. He said the new investment would mean that retailers would not only be able to move their goods faster and more efficiently across borders but also reduce costs as a result.
CDG became FedEx Express’ main European hub in 1999 and is the largest FedEx hub outside of the US. The launch event was attended by the French President Francois Hollande.
