Among the new wave of commerce media networks emerging beyond traditional retail, Marriott International’s Marriott Media is transforming its vast hospitality ecosystem into a data-driven, omnichannel advertising platform, designed to engage travellers across the entire journey – from inspiration and booking through to the in-stay experience and beyond.
The foundation of Marriott’s media network is its scale and data. The company operates more than 9,500 properties globally and has built a loyalty programme, Marriott Bonvoy, with some 237mn members worldwide – one of the largest and most valuable first-party datasets in global travel.
Unlike many retail media networks, which rely primarily on shopping behaviour, Marriott’s data captures travel intent, preferences, spending patterns and lifestyle signals, often at higher income levels and across international markets.
That distinction matters. Travel is a high-consideration category, with longer planning cycles and larger transaction values. As a result, Marriott’s audience is not just large, but highly valuable and highly engaged, particularly for premium and global brands.
Given the nature of its business, Marriott’s media network is designed to operate across an extensive and wide range of touchpoints, creating a genuinely end-to-end proposition. On the digital side, advertisers can place campaigns across Marriott’s website, mobile app and email communications, targeting users during the planning and booking phases. These are moments of clear intent, where consumers are actively considering destinations, experiences and purchases.
Within the physical environment, Marriott has opened up in-room TVs, wifi login pages and
in-property digital screens as advertising inventory. This is where the model becomes particularly distinctive: guests are not just browsing, they are present, often for extended periods, in high-attention environments.
Beyond owned channels, Marriott is also extending into offsite and social platforms, allowing campaigns to follow users beyond its own ecosystem and connect exposure across all stages of the journey. The result is a network that spans pre-trip discovery and planning, booking and transaction, in-stay engagement and post-stay re-engagement.
This journey-based approach is one of the clearest examples of how commerce media differs from traditional retail media. It is not anchored to a single transaction point, but to a continuous, multi-stage consumer experience.
This gives the platform more than 200 targetable attributes, combining demographic data with behavioural signals, travel intent and customer preferences. This lets brands reach audiences with a high degree of contextual relevance, whether that is promoting a restaurant to a foodie traveller or a financial service to a frequent international flyer.
Already the advertiser base reflects the voluminous, premium and global nature of Marriott’s audience. Pilot campaigns have included brands such as PepsiCo, Visa, United Airlines, Uber, Starbucks, Audible and American Express. These are brands that benefit from reaching consumers in a travel context, whether that is promoting financial products, experiences, food and beverage or broader lifestyle services.
There are challenges, however. The network is still relatively new and scaling globally while maintaining customer experience requires careful balance. As with all commerce media platforms, there is also a risk of over-commercialisation, particularly in environments such as hotel rooms where consumers expect comfort and privacy.
The direction of travel, if you’ll pardon the pun, is clear. Marriott is moving from being a hospitality company with advertising opportunities to becoming a full commerce media platform, capable of competing for brand budgets alongside retailers, platforms and publishers. In doing so, it illustrates a broader shift in the market. Retail media is no longer confined to retail, it is evolving into a wider commerce media ecosystem, where any business that owns valuable customer relationships, data and attention can become a media owner.
