The number of parcels shipped worldwide is set to double in the five years from 2020 to 2025, according to a new report.
Pitney Bowes found in its annual report global parcel volumes had reached 87 billion in 2018, up 17% from 74 billion in 2017. The report covers all types of parcels and looks at volumes across the US, Canada, Brazil, Germany, the UK, France, Italy, Norway, Sweden, China, Japan, Australia and India.
The firm claims that volumes will reach 100 billion by 2020 and 200 billion by 2025. It expects volumes to see a 13.7% compound annual growth rate from 2019 to 2023.
Of the 13 markets surveyed Pitney Bowes said China was the biggest market, accounting for 51 billion parcels in 2018. The UK saw the second highest per capita figure at 53. The report said the parcel market was highly consolidated, with around 75% of parcel shipments carried by Royal Mail, Hermes, Amazon Logistics, DHL and UPS.
