Just Eat sees 58% rise in revenues as more consumers buy their takeaways online, and via mobile

Just Eat today said order numbers and revenues were up by more than 50% in its latest financial year, reflecting a fast move online for takeaway ordering both in the UK and its other international markets. Pre-tax profits, however, were down compared to the previous year.

The online delivery marketplace, a Top250 retailer in the IRUK Top500, today said revenues hit £247.6m in the year to December 31 2015, 58% up on the same time last year. Order numbers reached 96.2m in the year, up by 57% on the same time last year.

Chief executive David Buttress said: “The global online takeaway market continues to grow as consumers become ever more demanding; wanting more choice and greater convenience. Just Eat has been at the leading edge of developing and growing the online marketplace for takeaway food delivery as it responds to these changing trends.”

In its core UK market, he said orders rose by 48% to 67.3m. More than 70% of all UK orders came from mobile devices, including orders via the Just Eat apps. Orders via apps accounted for 41% of all UK orders. That’s up from 33% at the same time last year.

At the same time, the number of takeaway restaurants using the platform reached 24,600 at the end of the year, up from 24,600 a year earlier.

But pre-tax profits of £34.6m were down on the £57.4m reported last time, after costs including £6.6m relating to the acquisition of businesses in Australia and Mexico, as the company increases its international presence.
