Liverpool FC adds PayPal, reports 10% of users choose to use it

Liverpool FC has seen impressive take up of PayPal Express Checkout since adding it to their online store. The work was carried out by Snow Valley, the ecommerce services provider that originally built the club’s online store. Liverpool FC was the first client to use Snow Valley’s PayPal Integration Module, which allows retailers to add PayPal to their checkout processes with minimum development time and budget.

Liverpool fans can now choose to buy replica kit and other merchandise using their PayPal accounts. The feature was added to the club’s online store in time for the launch of the new away kit, which went on sale in May.

“Liverpool FC is one of the world’s most popular football clubs. Whenever we launch a new kit, our site is inundated with fans from all over the globe that want to buy it,” says Michael Crowder, operations manager of the Liverpool FC digital media department.

“It is essential that we make it as easy as possible for all of our fans, at home and abroad, to get hold of the new shirt. We were confident that by adding PayPal we would attract more customers from overseas, and we hoped that those in the UK would like the flexibility of the extra payment option.”

“10% of the orders placed during the kit launch used PayPal, which was far greater than we expected,” Crowder explains. “What was particularly pleasing was that 75% of those orders were from new customers who had never bought online from us before. We’re really very pleased with PayPal so far.”

The implementation of PayPal was part of a broader project to prepare the Liverpool FC online store for the kit launch. Snow Valley also added a new personalised kit builder feature, a product carousel, and completed the first phase of a design and user experience overhaul.
