Amazon experimenting with Go technology for larger stores

Amazon is looking to take its cashier-less technology pioneered in its Go Stores out to other retailers, industry sources suggest.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the company is conducting experiments on how its scanning technology can work in larger spaces with high ceilings. Amazon Go technology allows shoppers to sign in to a store, pick up what they want and then leave, all without interacting with any staff, thanks to an Amazon Go app.

The technology uses sophisticated scanning tech to ‘see’ what each consumer does, what makes it into their basket and then matches that to their app and account to charge them on the way out.

The move reported in The Wall Street Journalis thought to be the start of a push to roll out its technology to other retailers, all looking to boost footfall and fundamentally change the in-store retail experience. Many retailers, inspired by the roll out of Amazon’s own Go stores in the US, have already started looking at how they can offer a revamped in-store experience based on smartphones. Amazon looks to be taking these systems on directly.

In the UK, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Co-op and Budgens are all trialling check-out-less shopping, opting for the more straightforward ‘scan and go’ smartphone technology to make it happen. These services use barcode scanning within the retailer’s app to let shoppers with an account scan what they want and leave, checking out via the app.

These systems are significantly less sophisticated than what Amazon offers, but does have the advantage that it is cheaper and less technically challenging – and works today. Amazon’s experiments look to be trying to move it into this space as retailers are already looking for solutions.
