MADE.COM teams up with Geev to offer a second-life to used furniture – and donates to charity

MADE.COM has in promoting second-life for furniture, teaming up with preloved app Geev to offers customers a zero-waste, zero-cost solution to find a second home for their preloved furniture and homewares.

The partnership with Geev forms part of MADE’s long-term commitments to becoming a truly circular and sustainable business, says the company. Last week IKEA announced its plan to buy back and resell used furniture as the sector looks to be more sustainable post-COVID.

Established in 2017, Geev is an online platform enabling individuals to donate their unwanted items to others in their neighbourhoods free of charge, from food and clothing to furniture and homewares. With more than 2.8 million users globally, including France and Canada, Geev has given a second life to nearly 9 million products since inception.

Marking the next stage in its sustainability journey, MADE has partnered with Geev to support one of its four key commitments with an emphasis on introducing new ways to extend the life of products. Enabling customers to give away not throw away unwanted items, the MADE + Geev initiative provides a simple, easy, and cost-free channel for customers to rehome their old furniture and homewares.

Not only does it help reduce waste thus the environmental impact, but it also strengthens community connection by offering the opportunity to enjoy each other’s preloved pieces. MADE will also donate 10% of each customer’s new purchase value on its site to one of five national charities on their behalf.

Philippe Chainieux, CEO at MADE.COM, explains: “From the very beginning, MADE has pioneered a new way of working and producing in our sector, focusing on design-led, small batch production that ensures we only produce what we know we’ll sell. Our vertically integrated model gives us control over our supply chain, enabling us to embed sustainable practices quickly and efficiently at every stage; from the materials we source right through to how we support our customer to shop responsibly."

Chainieux continues: “The launch of our sustainability commitments marks an exciting milestone for MADE, as we look to build a truly circular and responsible business that has a positive impact on its communities and the planet.”

He adds: “Our partnership with Geev is a significant first step in tackling the end of life of products. This is a key issue for our sector and we know how important it is to our customers. We believe our giveaway initiative with Geev provides a simple and easy-to-use tool to help customers further the life of their preloved items and support their local communities, while lessening their impact on the planet.”

Hakim Baka, Co-founder of Geev, says: "We are delighted to launch Geev in the UK in partnership with MADE.COM, a digital pure player recognised in the furniture and homeware design world for its commitment towards sustainable development. This partnership marks a key step in our evolution to make donations the go-to zero-waste solution on a large scale, offering a local and efficient option for consumers who wish to give a second life to objects they don’t need anymore. In the longer term, our objective is to continue to make Geev available to other e-commerce players as a take-back solution, supporting them on their sustainability journey.”

How MADE + Geev works

To use the service, a customer makes a purchase on MADE.COM and clicks ’get started’ on the order success screen. They choose from one of MADE’s five partner charities to support and follow the link through to Geev. The user then signs up to Geev and posts an ad for their unwanted furniture or homewares. Once the ad is validated and posted on Geev, it donates 10% of your order value to the chosen charity.

For this initiative, MADE has partnered with five UK charities that champion the brand’s values and commitments, including Groundwork, Centre Point, Akt, Kids Out and Wonder Foundation.

MADE’s sustainability commitments

Building on its vertically integrated business model and innovative, data-led ‘just-in-time’ supply chain that only produces design-led, small batches of furniture and homewares, MADE’s sustainability commitments mark the next stage in the brand’s journey towards being a truly circular and responsible business, with a positive impact on the planet and people.

The commitments focus on four key areas; firstly, the responsible sourcing of raw materials; secondly, ensuring all packaging is either recycled or recyclable; thirdly, promoting and providing initiatives that extend the life of products, and fourthly, providing MADE’s customers with transparent information to enable them to shop responsibly. Visit made.com/our-commitments for more details.

MADE’s giveaway initiative with Geev is now available to customers in the UK and France. Customers can download the Geev app for free (iOS and Android), or visit geev.com.
