Will new app be the death knell of the plastic gift card?
Leading money-saving brand vouchercloud has launched Europe’s first completely digital gifting app and website, with the aim of disrupting the entire gifting market, in particular the £5 billion gift card sector – just as the Christmas gift card season starts to rev up.

The new app, Giftcloud, will allow users instant access to digital gift cards from some of the UK’s retail giants, which can then be sent immediately via text, email or Facebook. It already has the backing of retail giants House of Fraser, Debenhams, Currys PC World, Ticketmaster, eHarmony, Cineworld, Starbucks and restaurant chains Pizza Express, ASK Italian and Zizzi.

The platform allows users to gift digital gift cards via the website or the app within a matter of minutes. This new technology will provide an instant gifting solution and streamline the entire gifting process, covering all occasions and celebrations and replacing those unwanted gifts with the element of choice.

Once a user has decided which brand the recipient of their gift would prefer, they can select their chosen gift amount and attach it to an accompanying e greetings-card from a pre-loaded template or even upload a photo, with the option to add a personal message to the recipient. The platform also has the ability to track when the gift is opened, so users can be sure that the recipient has received their gift.

The digital gift cards can be redeemed online or in-store, with a number of retailers and restaurants also offering the user the option to redeem the gift card at the till point via their smartphone.

Users can schedule gift cards to be sent on any date and time of choice. Users can also link Giftcloud to Facebook accounts to receive birthday reminders to ensure none are missed; converting those ‘Happy Birthday’ wall posts on Facebook into gift if the user should so wish.

Greg LeTocq, Founder of Giftcloud, said: “We’re very excited to announce the launch of Giftcloud – it’s the natural follow-up gift app and website to our market-leading vouchercloud brand. Being the first to market in Europe with a brand, app and website dedicated to digital gifting, we are introducing technology which will change consumer behaviour by providing a better, quicker and more interactive way to send gifts and upgrade birthday messages on social media. As well as being the perfect solution for long distance and everyday gift-giving, Giftcloud is also ideal for those awful light bulb moments when you suddenly remember it’s a relative’s or friend’s birthday and it’s too late to get a present. What’s more, no one need ever be unsure about whether the gift they’ve purchased is something the recipient will like, as Giftcloud offers complete choice to the receiver. The app has arrived in time for Christmas, so we’re hoping that many shoppers will benefit during that dreaded gift hunt.”
