Online sales have seen some of their fastest growth of the year in recent days, notching up a sales rise of more than 50%.
That’s the finding of the latest High Street Sales Tracker published today by accountants BDO LLP, published today.
It found that in the week ending May 9, non-store sales, through online, mail order and telephone, rose by 54.8%. It’s the biggest growth seen since the first week of the year. There was growth across sectors, with clothing doing particularly well.
Meanwhile on the high street like-for-like sales were up by 3.5%. The homewares category saw strong demand for DIY products, with a 10% rise in sales. Fashion was up by 2.6% and non-fashion by 3.8%.
Don Williams, head of retail at BDO LLP, said: “High street spending held up extremely well this week even with the uncertainty around the outcome of the general election.” He put the appetite to buy down to purchases for the summer months.
