Dixons Carphone points to growing multichannel sales in weak peak market

Dixons Carphone today pointed to growing multichannel sales over its peak trading period – but overall sales were down. The retailer said it had had a good peak in a weak UK market and said it was on track to deliver its longer-term transformation.

 

The group, which owns the Currys PC World and Carphone Warehouse retail brands, today said that group sales were down by 2% in the 10 weeks to January 4, compared to the same time last year, while like-for-like sales – the measure that strips out the effect of store, and business, openings and closures – were flat. Electricals sales grew only on a like-for-like basis (+2%), while mobile sales in the UK and Ireland were down both in total (-11%) and on a like-for-like basis (-9%). This, said the group, was in line with expectations.

 

Electricals sales were flat across the group with like-for-like sales up by 2%. In the UK and Ireland market, electricals sales were 1% ahead in total and 2% ahead on a like-for-like basis as sales of TVs, gaming, smart tech and small domestic appliances grew. Online sales were up by 7% on last time. The retailer said it had grown its share of a market that was down by 3% over the period. It said it had continued to invest in an “unambiguous price promise” and in improving the customer proposition.

 

Multichannel highlights included a 140% rise in online sales in-store, and a 22% rise in click and collect sales in the Nordic markets.

 

Alex Baldock, Dixons Carphone group chief executive, said: “We’ve had a good peak in a weak UK market and we’re on track to deliver what we promised for this year, and with our longer‐term transformation.

 

“Peak saw us continue to invest in our strategic initiatives with encouraging results. Credit and services adoption rates increased, online sales grew strongly and our newly remodelled stores performed well.”

 

There was a more mixed picture across its international markets. International electricals sales were down by 1% in total but up by 3% on a like-for-like basis. UK and Ireland mobile sales, however, were down by 11% in total and by 9% on a like-for-like basis.

 

Currys PC World is a Leading retailer in IRUK Top500 research, while Carphone Warehouse is Top50.

 

Dixons Carphone trades through 1,500 stores and 16 websites in eight countries.
