With the average UK online shopper now spending more than £6,000 a year online, today’s launch of the Poundland website comes as no surprise. A study out today from Tryzens suggests that lower-income shoppers spend up to 40% of their income online, perhaps making the Poundland audience a ripe one for ecommerce. The hurdle for the discount retailers to jump has always been the cost of delivery, but Poundland addresses that with a flat delivery charge that also trades on the convenience of online ordering.
Convenience is also in the news today thanks to the upwards move to £30 for contactless card transactions. Payment card companies predict that as NFC becomes more popular in contactless, so consumers will be more likely to try other new payment methods.
Today being September 1, we start to look ahead to the Christmas shopping season with the launch of our rolling report on Black Friday, Cyber Monday and holiday shopping in general.
We also have news of a new launch for former Book Depository chief technology officer Emad Eldeen Elakehal, an interview with Patrick Tsang of Gnet on the rise of O2O services in China – and why that matters to UK retailers, while today’s guest comment comes from Steven Ledgerwood of Emarsys.
