Retailers set to enjoy a multichannel boost this Christmas

In today’s InternetRetailing newsletter, the focus is on the contribution that ecommerce makes. We report how e-retailers are set to share in online shopping put at £13bn over Christmas, with Sage Pay figures suggesting those who don’t trade online could miss out to the tune of £88bn over the festive season.

We also report on the rise in sales that Weird Fish saw in 2013, thanks to investment in ecommerce. It’s no surprise that online trading is growing, when you consider two sets of research that we cover in today’s newsletter. Give as you Live suggests that shoppers buy from locations including their beds and the toilets, while Toluna says 70% of UK smartphone users check their phones as soon as they wake up. At the same time, logistics providers are making it ever easier for consumers to take delivery of their online orders: today we report on CollectPlus’ partnership with Capital & Regional to bring their click and collect service to local community shopping centres.

Of course, this all reflects the growth in ecommerce and multichannel retailing that Tesco knows all about. We hope its decision to slow IT spending doesn’t hit its multichannel progress too hard.

Finally, today’s guest comment comes from Giulio Montemagno, SVP of international at RetailMeNot, who considers how online can reinvigorate store footfall – and spending.
