Two ways Sainsbury’s and Argos are moving closer together

Two ways Sainsbury's and Argos are moving closer together

Shoppers will soon be able to order Sainsbury’s products via Argos in a move that brings the two retail brands further together.

From April 25 they can buy the supermarket’s Tu clothing range from the general merchandiser, for next-day home delivery when ordered by 2pm, or for click and collect from 1,100 branches of Sainsbury’s and of Argos. The offer stands out for its lack of minimum order size and the offer of free returns in stores.

Sainsbury’s aims to expand the growth of the clothing range, which already contributes almost £1bn in sales to the group, by selling via Argos, where a new ‘look and feel’ for buying Tu on its website is now live.

Mike Coupe, group chief executive of Sainsbury’s, said: “We know that customers are increasingly shopping for clothes online and that they love the convenience of being able to collect them from a store. When we bought Argos we always knew that we wanted to enable customers to buy Tu clothing from Argos so this is a major milestone for us. We hope Argos customers embrace the Tu range in the way that Sainsbury’s customers have over the past ten years.”

Sainsbury’s bought Argos in 2016 and at the time said the acquisition would make customers’ lives easier. This week it said that the move was part of its strategy to roll out the benefits of its Argos purchase to customers.

The supermarket also this week opened its 200th Argos store within Sainsbury’s – at its Pimlico branch. It says that such openings have proved popular and were well used by customers as well as creating significant synergies and utilising store space efficiently. The Argos store in Sainsbury’s Pimlico boasts 14,000 products available on site. Customers can also access close to 50,000 products online and if they order before 1pm they can collect by 4pm the same day. The company has said it will open 250 Argos stores in Sainsbury’s supermarkets by March 2019.

Argos’s website is now the third most visited retail website in the UK, with 60% of sales originating online.

Sister brand Habitat, also part of the Argos acquisition, now has six Mini Habitats within Sainsbury’s supermarkets, as well as five standalone stores in London, Leeds and Edinburgh.
