The CEO of video game giant Sega finds the concept of its own subscription service “very interesting”, and could soon follow its rivals Playstation Plus and Xbox Game Pass memberships models.

In a recent interview, Sega’s president Shuji Utsumi explained that it was “evaluating some opportunities”.

“We’re thinking something – and discussing something – we cannot disclose right now,” he said.

Currently, Sega games are available on various streaming services, charged individually depending on the game. For example, Xbox Game Pass prices range from £6.99 to £14.99 a month, while PlayStation Plus ranges from £6.99 to £13.49 a month.

As Playstation celebrated its 30th anniversary in December 2024, the company updated its own subscription offering. The subscription service has turned its back on a one-size-fits-all package, now with three tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium.

The first level, Essential, provides monthly games, online multiplayer as well as  exclusive content and discounts. Consumers can also choose between three payment options. A yearly subscription of £59.99, a three-month subscription of £19.99 or monthly at £6.99.

Extra provides the benefits of the Essential package but adds access to a game catalogue, featuring hundreds of games from “genre-defining blockbusters to innovative indies”, with new titles added regularly. This can be accessed for £10.99 a month, £31.99 every three months or £99.99 for the year.

Finally, Premium combines both Essential & Extra tiers benefits along with exclusive features such as game trials, cloud streaming, and the Classics Catalogue. This content will cost shoppers £13.49 a month, £39.99 for the three month option, or £119.99 annually.

Could Sega follow suit with its own Netflix-like style gaming subscription service?
