SportsShoes.com says both its sales and profits grew in a year that more people took up exercise during pandemic restrictions – and went online to buy the equipment. Now it is focusing on winning repeat custom from existing shoppers.

The retailer, ranked Top150 in RXUK Top500 research, has reported sales of £92.2m in the year to February 2021. That’s 37% higher than the previous year. Earnings before one-off costs came in at £12.2m, 118% higher than last time.

Sales in the first seven months of this year, to September 30 2021, were broadly in line with the same time last year. UK sales are 11.9% ahead, year-on-year. Repeat business from existing customers has grown by 20% – and its community now has 1.25m members.

SportsShoes.com managing director Brett Bannister says: ““By continuing to invest in our employees, processes and technologies throughout 2020-21, we ensured we provided our customers with an outstanding online shopping experience and excellent aftercare.

“We remain committed to continually investing and improving our business for the benefit of our people, brand partners and customers. This latest financial year is about consolidation and retaining those new customers who joined us.”

SportsShoes.com was set up in 1982 and now sells a range of more than 17,000 products from 149 running and outdoor brands, from Asics and Nike to Mammut and Rab.

Bannister says: ““Trading conditions this year have become more complex due to the well documented global supply chain issues that are impacting retailers. However, we have excellent relationships with our brand partners which helps offset this situation.

“We are looking forward to establishing more brand partnerships as we continue to grow and further strengthen our position as the runners’ premium online retailer of choice. We have also set an ambitious objective of becoming the most sustainable running equipment retailer in the world and look forward to revealing more about how we will achieve that goal in due course.”
