Stockpiling trend from Lockdown 1.0 moves online, search data shows

With a second lockdown seemingly inevitable in the UK, panic buying is again on the rise – and this time it is online as well as in store.

Amazon search data proves that the demand for ‘essential items’ such as toilet roll, hand sanitiser and pasta is quickly growing.

According to data from Acorn-i’s proprietary tech platform that pulls data directly from Amazon, searches for ‘toilet roll’ – the Holy Grail item of lockdown 1.0 –  has seen a significant spike upwards in recent weeks, rising 66 places in trending searches from last month.

Searches for ‘pasta’, another item seeming to define this pandemic, have also surged in the last few weeks, too.
