Tesco ‘commuter zone’ aims to make it easier to buy on the way to work

Tesco has launched a new ‘commuter zone’, in a bid to make it easier for shoppers to buy on the way to and from work.

The multichannel supermarket says the innovation means commuters can “avoid the hassle of carrying heavy shopping at the end of a busy day at the office”.

The commuter zone, designed to be easily accessible on a smartphone, contains a range of products that workers are likely to want throughout the day, from breakfast foods and toiletries to lunchtime sandwiches and dinnertime ready meals.

It also links to shoppers’ favourites, shows their basket and enables them to choose a delivery time.

Tesco director of internet retailing Ken Towle said this was an innovation for shoppers with busy lives. “Our new commuter zone is the latest way we’re helping customers to manage their time, by pulling together a range of high quality products and categorizing them to reflect the working week,” he said.

“As the nights close in and it gets colder and darker, customers needn’t worry about stopping to shop on their way home – Tesco can deliver their order straight to their door, giving them more time to enjoy their evenings and weekends.”

Our view: Tesco’s commuter zone is the latest in a series of innovations that also includes its Gatwick airport virtual shop, launched during the summer. Both are moving towards a concept of lifestyle shopping, where retailers make it easy for shoppers to buy at convenient moments. It’s a logical next step for the anytime, anywhere commerce that is multichannel shopping.
