The sunshine effect on online sales

As the UK’s sunny weather continues, there’ve been much talk of the expected rise in high street sales as shoppers decide to update their wardrobes and garden equipment in light of the kind of weather we haven’t seen for quite some time. The thinking is that shoppers will want to head for their high street, to enjoy a day’s shopping in the warmth.

But what hasn’t been so clear is the effect of that warm weather on ecommerce sales. Will people want to spend their time looking at a screen when they could be out having fun? New figures from the IMRG today appear to suggest that the answer to that question is a resounding yes. UK online sales, says the IMRG-Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, grew by 20% in June, the fastest rate of growth that index has recorded for two years.

In today’s Internet Retailing newsletter we also report on retailers from River Island, Whittards and Thorntons to Moda In Pelle and Boohoo.com. Read the stories below for more.

Webinars

We have an upcoming webinar to let you know about today.

On Tuesday August 13, Jim Davidson, manager of marketing research at Bronto, joins us for Bam! Ka-Pow! Power-packing your post-purchase programs. During the event, to be held at 2pm, he will be considering how post-purchase email marketing can help to ensure long-term customer loyalty and repeat sales. It’s an under-used part of the customer lifecycle, he says, that can give a strong boost to online sales and conversion by talking directly to the multi-device, multi-tasking consumer. Find out more on the Bronto webinar page, where you can also register for free.

More information about our webinar programme is available here.

Events

We’re also excited to have the first details of the 8th Internet Retailing Conference. The event will be held on October 16 in London. Keynote speakers will include Sir Stuart Rose, chairman of Ocado and Dressipi, and Laura Wade-Geary, executive director, multichannel ecommerce, Marks & Spencer.
