Amazon to introduce climate pledge labelling on products to help shoppers make sustainable choices

Amazon has launched a climate-friendly programme that will see more than 25,000 products displayed with a ‘Climate Pledge Friendly’ label to help shoppers make sustainable choices when shopping.

The retailer is driving to be carbon-neutral by 2040 and will introduce the labelling across grocery, household, fashion, beauty and personal electronics on the site.

“With 18 external certification programs and our own Compact by Design certification, we’re incentivizing selling partners to create sustainable products that help protect the planet for future generations,” Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos said in a statement.

The retail giant has faced mounting criticism over its large delivery, warehousing and data centre emmisions and this is part of Bezos’ plan to try and reign that in. It follows on the heals of the launch of a $2 billion Climate Pledge VC Fund to invest in companies across industries to help reduce the impact of climate change and support sustainable development.

The company has also ramped up its R&D around autonomous delivery technology in the UK, creating a dedicated team at its Cambridge development centre to develop the more eco-friendly Amazon Scout delivery robot.
