Elite European retailers named in Europe Top500 report 2019

Retailers from across the EEA are today named as Elite retailers in the Europe Top500 Report 2019, the annual RetailX ranking and analysis of European businesses.

Carrefour,  H&M, Ikea, Marks & Spencer, Tesco and Zara win places in the top tier of European retailing, as defined by the RXEU Top500, produced in association with Oracle Netsuite and now available to download.

The report analyses at how leading European retailers and brands are developing their multichannel businesses while also serving customers across the 32 countries of the European Economic Area plus Switzerland. It also considers questions from how different sectors are performing within the ranking to how retailers and brands tailor their offerings to different markets and asks how retailers can best prepare themselves for Brexit.

InternetRetailing editor-in-chief Ian Jindal says the report shows leaders continuing to improve their cross-border performance as they offer shoppers more choice. “Customers are responding as options widen in areas from payment methods to languages, from deliveries through to the way they are able to engage with the retailers they favour,” he said.

At the same time, the research finds a changing understanding of what stores are for in connected retailing. “The proportion of of retailers offering multichannel services – from click and collect to returns – through their stores has fallen. In this report, we explore some of the reasons we may be seeing these types of changes to services and look at how this may change again in the future,” said Jindal.

RetailX researchers determined the Top500 retailers included in the report by assessing their size and performance, before going on to analyse their performance in six performance dimensions: strategy and innovation, the customer, operations and logistics, merchandising, brand engagement, and mobile and cross-channel. The RXEU Top500 features analysis and case studies in each of the dimensions before going on to look at the part that brands play within the index.
