Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona plans to hire 200 new digital experts to bolster its IT team over the next six months as it seeks to capitalise on technologies such as the cloud and IoT.

The retailer has been aggressively recruiting computer scientists over the last four months, resulting in 200 new hires. The hiring programme is set to continue until March 2020 with the aim of doubling this figure.

Mercadona said it now has a computer science team with specialists across a range of disciplines including software engineering, cloud, site reliability, project management, business architecture, system administration, operations, analytics, IoT and security.

Aquilino López, director of the computer purchasing division, said: “We want to thank the interest and effort to join this company of the more than 10,000 people who have signed up for the selection process, a process that remains open with the aim to continue adding talent and quality to continue advancing in our commitment to Digital Transformation.

“With this technological commitment we intend to respond to the needs of our ’Bosses’ and evolve Mercadona towards efficiency and agility through the analysis of unique and truthful data that allow us to make the best decision.”

Mercadona’s innovation plan aims to transform its supply, logistics, finance, human resources, store management and customer relations functions. The company announced earlier this year it would invest €150 per year in digital transformation.
